MARIAN & JOE
My grandparents live on a big hill in San Rafael. When we were kids, my siblings and I would explore the big hill in the back yard in search of lizards and snakes. A few times we were actually able to catch a lizard or two. At the foot of the hill stood a bird bath, placed there by my grandmother who would love to point out the blue jays playing in the water. My grandmother passed away in December, but before she did, I was able to visit her one last time. I was happy that I was able to bring my own son to say goodbye. I was happy to be able to bring him up to the same big hill, although as an adult, it didn't seem quite as big anymore. We searched for lizards, and even found a few. We gathered sticks and used them as swords. I pointed out the Blue Jays flying from tree branch to tree branch as we listened to them sing. In the following weeks I watched as my grandfather gracefully parted ways with his loving wife, at least in this life, and for the time being. I know we will all see each other again one day, but until that time comes, I will always remember our day on the hill with the lizards and blue jays.Marian & Joe. 16" x 20".
