WHEN I GROW UP
When I first decided to keep a running blog, a big part of the reason was to give the reader a candid look at my thoughts and process as an artist. I wanted to share background stories about certain paintings and to share with you what may have inspired a particular idea. One of the best things about art is it's unique to each viewer. Everyone can imagine their own stories as to what an individual piece might mean. In addition to your own thoughts, if you're interested, I'd like to share with you mine. When I Grow Up is special to me for a number of reasons. It is my very first FATKID painting. When I decided I wanted to take painting seriously I had all of these ideas in my head, but had no idea if I'd actually be any good. I started painting it shortly after I was married, in our first apartment. At the time, I didn't want to get paint anywhere inside the apartment, so I decided to paint exclusively on our balcony. I had to delay the start of this painting a few months because a Mamma Pigeon decided to keep a nest and raise her babies right there on the balcony floor. I believe pigeons use a good amount of there own poop to build their nests because the entire corner of our balcony was covered in pigeon feces. Eventually, the birds abandoned their nest and I was able to get someone to clean the mess and then FATKID began...When I Grow Up was actually painted for an art show that never panned out. The theme of the art show was "Can I Be"... To me it simply symbolizes that kids are full of dreams. Kids are so awesome because they are basically a blank canvas. They can grow up to be anything they put their minds to. Dream big! When I Grow Up. 20" x 30". Acrylic on canvas.
